Hey Crew. This post came off another site Im on and they need your help.
HELP please! We have a 1984 5.0 GT and have been told that the water pump we have on it now is the wrong one. Doesn't overheat, but in the morning there is a little puddle of antifreeze underneath it. I've looked up water pumps and have found two that seem to be the right one(s) - BUT - I need to know if this car takes a 6 vane impeller or an 8 vane impeller! I also see that there is either a 3.5" diameter or a 4.4" diameter - how do I find out which one mine is?? Any help would be greatly appreciated - we're trying to get the car ready to go to Carlisle, PA next weekend!! Thanks in advance!! Alex.

What you will need to do is get the s/n of the block/engine. Then take it to a Ford tech. They will be able to tell you what you need to know.

You probably have purchased a water pump by now, but here is my 2 cents anyway. The only difference that I would be concerned about is the rotation (v-belt - standard rotation vs serpentine - reverse rotation). The 8 vane probably has a higher flow rate. If the pump's dimensions and rotation are identical to your old pump, I'd go with the higher flow rate pump.
